It is not an exaggeration to say that the MacBook Pro with M1 Max lags far behind NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU in gaming tests. The new Apple laptop has been compared against powerful laptops like ASUS ROG Zephyrus G-501 and MSI Dominator Platinum GTX, two of which can easily outperform any old Intel Core i9 7820X equipped device out there.

Various tech sources have started to publish benchmarks for Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max-equipped MacBook Pro models. AnandTech published one of the most extensive assessments, which included benchmarks that showed how the new CPUs would handle recent games. In games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Borderlands 3, even the more powerful M1 Max with up to 32-core GPU struggles to match NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3080 laptop GPU, which isn’t surprising given that they’re both x86 titles. Other tests, like as the GFXBench 5.0 Aztec Ruins benchmark, imply that Apple’s assertion that the M1 Max’s graphics performance is “equivalent to that of a high-end small PC pro laptop” was not exaggerated.

[…] At 1080p, the M1 Max is CPU constrained; the x86-to-Arm translation through Rosetta is not free, and even though Apple’s CPU cores are pretty fast, they’re running against CPU restrictions here. To enable the M1 Max completely extend its legs, we have to move to 4K. The 16-inch MacBook Pro is still a long way from the 6800M. Though, as both the game and the 2x performance scaling from the M1 Pro to the M1 Max illustrate, we’re obviously GPU-bound at this point.

[…] Borderlands 3 is much worse than Shadow of the Tomb Raider when it comes to the M1 chips. At 4K, the game seems to be GPU-bound, thus there isn’t an evident CPU bottleneck. And, to be honest, I don’t know enough about the Mac version’s porting effort to judge if it’s even a decent port to begin with. So I’m reluctant to blame everything on the GPU, particularly because the M1 Max is nearly 50% slower than the RTX 3080. However, if you want to watch Claptrap on an Apple laptop, the 2021 MacBook Pro may not be the greatest option.
Apple debuted its M1 Pro and M1 Max CPUs last week, claiming that they were the company’s most powerful chips ever. The M1 Max has 10 CPU cores, 32 GPU cores, and 64 GB of unified memory.
