[PSA] New British Cold War Tanks – Get the Details!

The British Ministry of Defence has released new details on their proposed Cold War-era tanks for the UK military. The project is now in a lengthy procurement process that could stretch into 2020, which leaves plenty of time to get your hands on these future tank designs.

The “tank encyclopedia” is a website that provides information about the British Cold War tanks. The site also includes pictures and videos of the tanks.

The Centurion tank series was first developed in 1943. The Centurion Mk. II entered service in 1947 as a “universal tank” to replace previous infantry and cruiser tanks. Between 1945 and 1946, a total of 100 Centurion Mk. II vehicles were produced before manufacturing transitioned to updated models that would see combat until the 1980s.

Although the Centurion only saw duty in 1947, it swiftly gained to prominence as the British Army’s principal combat tank, and it was produced in different configurations until the 1960s. The Centurion Mk. 5/1 has increased glacis armor and machine guns, putting it on par with the T-55 and M48 Patton tanks of the period.

The Centurion had a total of 13 markings and sub-variants during the course of its long existence. The Centurion Mk. 9, also known as the FV4015, was an enhanced variant of the Mk. 7 that was equipped with a 105mm L7 cannon. With the addition of infrared night-sighting technology, the Centurion Mk. 9/1 version advanced the design even more.

The FV214 Conqueror was created in 1946 in reaction to two distinct types of vehicles: German panzer tanks, which had shown better firepower during World War II, and the Soviet IS-3 heavy tank, which had entered service in 1945. Although the Conqueror’s 120mm cannon was considered a plus, tank personnel found the vehicle difficult to handle. In the 1960s, the Conqueror was phased out of service once the Centurion was equipped with a 105mm cannon.

The arrival of bigger and more powerful Soviet tanks after World War II prompted Britain to build a successor for its Centurion main combat tank. In 1963, the Chieftain tank was introduced into service. It was one of the world’s most powerful tanks at the time due to its superb armor protection and firepower. Nonetheless, it underwent various upgrades and variations during the course of its existence. The Chieftain Mk. 6 has a more powerful engine and a longer-range machine gun.

The Chieftain, widely regarded as the first real main battle tank, remained in service and received various upgrades even after its replacement, the 1st Challenger, arrived in 1980. The Mk. 11 variation was a step up from the Mk. 8 intermediate model. The Mk. 11 was developed in the late 1980s and included an upgraded fire control system (FCS), Stillbrew passive armor, and Barr and Stroud’s Thermal Observation and Gunnery Sight (TOGS) system.

 

1st Challenger

The Shir 2 was a derivative of the Chieftain main battle tank that was designed in the 1970s for sale to Iran. With the conclusion of the Iranian Revolution in 1979 and the ensuing political change, the project was terminated. At the same time, the UK’s MBT-80 programme was canceled because to financial constraints. The British Army repurposed the Shir 2 and accepted it into service as the Challenger in 1983 as a result of these circumstances. The Challenger was a significant improvement to the Chieftain, with its 120mm rifled cannon and Chobham composite armor.

2nd Challenger

The 2nd Challenger is a complete redesign of the Challenger 1 (FV4030/4). Chobham composite armor has been upgraded, and the gun barrel has been lengthened. The 2nd Challenger entered service in June 1998 and continues to serve as the British Army’s primary combat tank to this day.
