Review – The Ascent –

The Ascent is a game about the future of space exploration. It’s a sci-fi sandbox where players can build their own moon base, mine lunar resources, or explore the solar system.

Neon Giant is a new independent company founded in 2015 by industry veterans that have worked on some of our favorite games, including DOOM, Bulletstorm, and Gears of War. The Ascent, a future cyberpunk twin-stick shooter that proves to be an outstanding first game for the new company, has just been released.

Megacities? Check! Neon Lights, anyone? Check!

The Ascension takes set in a distant future when megacorporations rule the galaxy. The Ascension Group suddenly disbands, and Archology falls into anarchy. In order to acquire power, violence breaks out all over the place. You take on the role of a low-level worker tasked with figuring out what led The Ascent organization to suddenly disband.

The narrative serves to propel the gaming forward. While the concept is intriguing, there isn’t much to the narrative that will keep you interested. Except for Kira, with whom you spend a lot of time, I don’t recall much about the characters. The narrative as a whole felt hollow, and the fascinating concept of a megacorporation crumbling didn’t provide any satisfactory answers, but it did offer up a world that I wanted to investigate more. There are several text logs and NPCs that assist to develop the world of Ascent. 

The Ascent truly excels in terms of gameplay, with high-octane twin-stick shooting action that is a joy from start to finish. Guns have a tremendous feel to them, tearing opponents and even pieces of the landscape apart. They include anything from basic handguns to assault rifles to sniper rifles and a weapon class known as “extreme.” There’s a wide range of weapons to choose from, and they’re all a lot of fun to use. You may elevate your weapon to aim higher by holding the Left Trigger/Right Click, enabling you to land more critical shots on taller targets. You may safely shoot above cover by combining this with cover in the surroundings. 

You’ll encounter everything from tightly crowded slum regions to more corporate and gang-controlled zones as you explore the Archology. Exploration is enjoyable and rewarding since the areas are large and there are lots of surprises to discover. Chests holding valuable weapons and armour are hidden behind doors that you may not be able to open right away, so it’s essential to return to places as soon as possible. Boss battles may be fun, but there aren’t nearly enough of them. One of the game’s latter sections also seems to be grossly underused. Meanwhile, you’ll find yourself returning to the lowest level often. It may be exhausting to go through some of these places over and over again.

When I first started the game, I was concerned because of the game’s very restricted character creator and seeming lack of weapons and armour during the first several hours. The Ascent, on the other hand, has a strong emphasis on development, which is executed well. The game truly expands out after the first few hours and offers you a lot more stuff to go for. Then there are the augmentations, which boost your build potential even further. From battle drones to homing missiles, shockwaves, and even enormous laser beams launched directly from your arms, the possibilities are endless. There are a plethora of augmentations to select from, and you may use any two of them at once. 

It’s also nice to see a loot-based game avoid the old trope of using gear scores to increase your power, despite how simple it is to do so. Any weapon you choose is precisely what you receive, with no random damage characteristics, thus the shotgun you picked up at the beginning may be improved throughout the game. Armour functions similarly to armor but without the requirement to upgrade. It may also dramatically alter your appearance, including replacing bodily parts for a complete cyberpunk effect. Your core stats are affected by the armour you wear. 

The camera may be a bit of a pain at times, failing to fade out and leaving my character over the edge of the screen. It occurs often enough to be a concern, yet the problems are minor enough that the game never stops flowing. I did run across a few glitches, such as a quest marker showing for a mission I hadn’t yet accepted or falling through the global map, but all of these issues were resolved with a simple reload. During my gameplay, the game did crash a number of times, but nothing too serious. Apart from these small quibbles, The Ascent was a joy to play and I didn’t want to put it down.

The Ascent is designed to be a cooperative experience for up to four people, although it may also be enjoyed alone. From beginning to end, the main narrative will take around fifteen hours to complete. However, completing the game in its entirety may take anywhere from twenty-five to thirty hours. For some added challenge and replay value, I would have liked to see additional difficulty levels and maybe an NG+ mode with higher level opponents, but there is certainly enough to explore here.

The Ascent’s universe is wonderfully portrayed, and it’s become one of my new favorite cyberpunk settings in a long time. Around every turn, there’s a flurry of activity. Civilians go about their daily lives on the streets, while cars and other encounters occur organically all over the globe. It gives the impression of being in a genuine world with a functioning civilization. When the bullets start flying, everyone begins fleeing as you attempt to carefully shoot around them (unfortunately, hitting them results in little more than a line of dialogue).

However, it is let down by the shaky animations and sometimes shakier character models, which don’t always look fantastic, particularly during the cinematics. Thankfully, the game plays nicely at 34401440 (it’s always nice to have Ultrawide support), and I was able to consistently get over 60fps with DLSS on Ultra Quality setting with an RTX 2060.  

The Ascent is a wicked good time that mixes addicting twin-stick shooting, a stunning cyberpunk environment, and a thumping synth music that takes each moment to the next level. Despite certain flaws, I never wanted to put the game down.

 

One of the most aesthetically stunning cyberpunk worlds to date is The Archology.

The gameplay in The Ascent is quick, violent, and a lot of fun.

The grandiose music elevates The Ascent to new heights. Its excellent sound design adds to the feeling of weaponry being more powerful.

The Ascent may sometimes falter, but it is still a thrilling ride. It offers a beautiful environment and excellent gameplay.
