Hiroshi Yamauchi was born in Kyoto, Japan, in 1927. A businessman from Japan. He served as Nintendo’s third president from 1949 until his retirement on May 31, 2002, when he was replaced by Satoru Iwata. Yamauchi turned Nintendo from a hanafuda card-making firm operating only in Japan to the multibillion-dollar video game publisher and worldwide behemoth it is today over his 53-year career. Yamauchi’s net worth was assessed to be $2.1 billion by Forbes in April 2013, making him the 13th wealthiest person in Japan and the 491st richest person in the world. Yamauchi was Japan’s richest person in 2008, with a fortune estimated at $7.8 billion at the time. Yamauchi was Nintendo’s biggest shareholder at the time of his death. Yamauchi was born in Kyoto, Japan, to Shikanojo and Kimi Inaba. Yamauchi died at a hospital on September 19, 2013, at the age of 85, from pneumonia complications. Nintendo issued a statement in which it expressed its condolences for the death of its former president.
