The game is a platformer where the player controls Samus Aran, bounty hunter of intergalactic renown. As she explores the derelict space station known as the Bottle Ship, players must make their way through its many levels and defeat enemies to find an escape route.

The metroid timeline is a game that takes place in the Metroid universe. It is set in the year 2237, and follows Samus Aran as she tries to stop Ridley from destroying her homeworld.

REVIEW – I don’t understand Nintendo’s reasoning, since the two-dimensional Samus narrative could have easily been extended on the Nintendo DS and 3DS. Nonetheless, they did nothing about it. At the very least, the final product isn’t as bizarre and forgettable as the Nintendo Wii’s Other M.

Remember the term E.M.M.I. because you will have some… unpleasant times.

ZDR

In this instance, I’m not prepared to refer to the genre as Metroidvania. It’s a two-dimensional game with free exploration, in which the player chooses where they may travel and how they arrive to the story’s conclusion. The original Metroid, published in 1986 on the Famicom Disk System, was an example of this (and later the NES). Samus goes to the planet ZDR, and… you may fall asleep listening to the opening dialogue, which gives the player a lot of background information. This exposition might have been handled more effectively. Then there’s the inevitable woe: Samus Aran loses all of his powers, as is customary in video games. You may learn the controls at the start of the game, but you must understand that Metroid Dread is based on speed from the outset. Anyone who became addicted to the slower NES/SNES first/third installments (or the Game Boy’s second game) will have to retrain their reflexes. The disadvantage of speed is that many of the rooms will have identical appearances and forms, which is a drawback for a game of this kind. As a result, the map is often drawn out before intuition kicks in, slowing down gameplay and destroying the mood without being asked.

However, exploring is an important part of the genre, and Dread has enough of it. From each hub chamber, you may go in four different directions. Beyond there, you may get lost in more branches, at least until you’ve earned the required equipment to continue on, since, yeah, it wouldn’t be a Metroid game if you could just head straight to the final boss. You can still get lost, and you’ll come across some E.M.M.I., which aren’t exactly nice robots. Let’s pretend for a moment that the bounty hunter is the one who is being pursued in this instance. Is it possible to platform without being noticed? Yes, good luck, and don’t forget about the QTEs. (Admittedly, this isn’t as far-fetched as Resident Evil 4 was back in the day; nevertheless, it’s not an easy job.) At the very least, it improves the atmosphere since “where the f do I go” becomes a thinking process throughout the adventures because, as I previously said, bad map knowledge or a poorly timed leap may be expensive. (To put it another way, you’re going to die.) Please try again.)

The bounty hunter’s inadequacies

I have mentioned some of Metroid Dread’s drawbacks on the opening page. The boss battles itself aren’t very difficult (I wouldn’t say this for the basic, boring opponents, who are typically defeated with one or two strikes with your weapon that emphasize their vulnerability), and the disadvantage is aided mostly by the lighting spots on them. Even yet, there are several QTEs here that I don’t understand after playing Metroid Fusion on the GBA (the prequel to this game, by the way). In the two-dimensional iteration of the franchise, I appreciate the necessity for development. Still, perhaps, this “QTE for greater damage” command won’t appear in Metroid Prime 4, which is most likely stuck in development hell (and we’ll have to wait at least a few months to see this game unveiled properly…).

And, although this may just a shaky chair, I believe the narrative isn’t well integrated into the game. During gameplay, we’ve seen greater narrative in the genre. Still, it’s all about providing us a lot of background information at the start (which, let’s say, might be a good thing for gamers unfamiliar with Metroid), and then nothing at all. They may have given the framework a little more consideration in this instance. And here’s another thing I’d like to say regarding the game’s technology: On Twitter, DigitalFoundry editor John Linneman noted out that the game’s performance dips for 15-30 seconds before recovering. Is it conceivable that this is due to the Nintendo Switch’s sleep/rest mode? Is there a memory leak here? Nobody knows for sure right now.

Returning to 2D

Although Metroid Dread is a good game in its own right and deserves a nine out of ten, I believe we should settle with an 8.5. It may finish up with a weak nine if they solve the alleged memory leak issue. Take this rating as a default for people unfamiliar with the series. In terms of the game’s pricing, I’d advise you to contact Nintendo and lodge a complaint. They’re not going to sell their first-party IPs for less than AAA, particularly with such a strong return policy. This isn’t Metroid Prime: Federation Force (we placed it there since it wasn’t well-received). It’s worth a shot. Let’s hoping Metroid Prime 4 delivers. After the Other M-fiasco, that would be the greatest thing. That concludes the discussion…
