Review – Persona 5 Strikers

Persona 5 Strikers is a new game for the Nintendo Switch. It’s an interesting take on the fighting genre, with a unique twist on the mechanics of each fighter and some neat ideas about how to make it more fair.

The Persona 5 Strikers age rating is a game that was released on the PlayStation 4. It has been rated M for mature.

It’s what I refer to as the Final Fantasy Tactics effect. When a franchise you like, maybe even adore, has a spinoff that completely surpasses all of the previous games in the series. Purists scorn you since it’s not a mainstream entry, but you simply know it’s the greatest. FFT is the greatest example for me since, after all this time, it is still far and away the finest game I have ever played. And that’s saying a lot since Final Fantasy VII Remake is one of my all-time favorite games. I feel the same way with Persona 5 Strikers. In Japan, it’s called as Persona 5 Scramble, but we’ll simply call it P5S from now on.

I’d want to make another confession. Unlike the rest of the world, I wasn’t really fond with Persona 5. To be clear, I’m not one of those individuals who despises it vehemently. I really liked the idea, and the music is one of the finest. It also has a lot of flair. I spent almost 75 hours into it, so it wasn’t a case of “first hour and loathed it.” Rather, I thought it never lived up to the promise of the narrative idea, and the social sim gameplay was too boring and repetitive. However, one man’s lack of ambition is another’s genius, or something along those lines. What’s important to remember is that Persona 5 Strikers is a completely different narrative.

They say honesty is golden, and Haru is certainly one of them.

For starters, with Strikers, every problem I had with Persona 5 is either gone or addressed. The social sim elements, which I thought took up much too much of the game’s time, have been removed. Dungeons, which I used to think were too linear and tiny, have now grown to be massive and vast. The narrative focuses more on the idea of transforming hearts, and as a result, it is much more engaging. You also start with a complete group of Phantom Thieves, so you won’t have to wait almost the whole game for everyone. I could go on and on with a list of little and major elements since there are so many things in Persona 5 Strikers that I like.

Let’s get to the storyline. Atlus said that you may play Strikers with no previous knowledge of Persona 5. I wholeheartedly disagree. To fully enjoy Strikers, you must be familiar with the fundamental narrative beats of the original Persona 5 (Royal is not canon). It doesn’t matter how you do it; whether it’s by playing the game, watching the anime, or reading the Wikipedia description, do it. It’s a huge hurdle to overcome, but it’s well worth it. In any case, the game begins with the little time jump that happens at the conclusion of Persona 5 (at least, that’s my understanding). The Phantom Thieves are called back into action because there is more turmoil in the Metaverse and more twisted hearts to steal. There’s not much I can say without giving anything away, but if you’re concerned that this will be gratuitous or derisive, don’t be. It’s effective. Well.

Finally, someone who understands me. Sophia is the most amazing person.

The fighting is the major difference here. Strikers switched from a turn-based combat system to an action-based one. Or, at the very least, new-ish. Because it does feel like Persona 5 once you get accustomed to it and get into a groove. The One More system’s movements, mechanics, and components are all included. They’ve just been given the opportunity to shine. After all, the system was created to be a more rapid-fire version of Shin Megami Tensei’s Press Turn system. It was only now that it was permitted to be done correctly. The basic combination system is typical musou stuff, but that’s all there is to it. It’s everything here: air combos, ranged gun combat, special abilities, One More Strikes, Baton Pass, and All-Out Attacks. And it all comes together beautifully in one of the finest action fighting systems ever seen in a JRPG. There is no more to say.

Even though it may be difficult to believe, the incredible fighting and narrative aren’t the most important aspects of this game. The Demon Fusion System is the rightful owner of this distinction. It’s mostly unaltered, unlike the fighting system. The only significant distinction is that you cannot conduct Fusion by picking demons; instead, you must choose the intended outcome. Which, in the end, didn’t matter since this system is just too excellent. It never got tired collecting Personas, merging them, and combining abilities to create the ideal OP squad. Ever. Strikers is arguably the quickest and most fluid way to experience Pokémon on steroids, due to the new battle system.

It’s the same as Persona 5, so don’t expect anything different.

That’s not all; there’s one more significant adjustment to Persona collecting and progression. Unlike most other musou games, you may pay to increase your levels rather than grinding your way through them. This means you can bring Arsene to the finale with you. It’s always been so ridiculous that the main character’s flagship Persona was always swapped out for something better within an hour or two. You may now just pay to keep his level up to date, and he will never abandon you. Yes, this was significant enough to need its own paragraph. Arsene is an S-Class demon designer, thus losing him so early in Persona 5 was a major setback. That is no longer the case.

Then there’s the dungeon layout. They’re now known as Jails instead of Palaces, although they have the opposite design aesthetic. To me, the Palaces in Persona 5 were linear, tiny, and empty. They’re huge in Strikers, however, and full of mysteries, puzzles, and extras to discover and acquire. They remind me a lot of the dungeons in Tokyo Mirage Sessions, which is a huge praise. Persona 5’s effort at verticality is also made genuine by the new action emphasis. In addition to the Phantom Dash, the double jump adds to the excitement and dynamic nature of traversal. When you’re attempting to create a dungeon crawler that looks like a platformer, being able to move makes all the difference. To be clear, this is a combo I usually despise. But, like with so much in Persona 5, Strikers pulls it off.

So the Bond system is similar to Social Links, except it’s a lot less tedious, irritating, and rewarding. As a result, just better.

Persona 5 Strikers will be labeled as simply another offshoot for the rest of time. Which is odd, considering that Persona is just a spin-off of Persona, but whatever. Especially because it was first labeled as a musou game, which brought with it certain expectations. But, in the end, it’s more than simply another musou franchise offshoot game. It builds on what Age of Calamity accomplished (or at least attempted to do) for Breath of the Wild. It pays homage to the original game, corrects its faults, and, at least for me, makes everything better. It becomes for me what Persona 5 seems to be for everyone else. It’s not my favorite MegaTen game, but it’s very close. Shin Megami Tensei V, it’s your turn.

It’s exactly as beautiful and colorful as Persona 5, and the gameplay is much superior than my expectations.

Persona’s One More fight mechanism, in my opinion, functions better in full action than it does in turn-based mode. That is the highest praise I can give you.

All of the incredible music from Persona 5, plus many more incredible songs.

It’s so excellent, and I had so much fun with it, that I believe it makes a strong argument for the mainstream Persona series to become more action-oriented in the future.

Final Score: 9.5
