Microsoft Flight Simulator (Xbox Series S/X)

Microsoft Flight Simulator is a series of computer flight simulation games. The first game in the series was released in 1982 for the Apple II, Commodore 64, Atari 800, and IBM PC.

The Microsoft Flight Simulator (Xbox Series S/X) is a game that was released in 2005. It is the first installment in Microsoft’s Xbox series of simulation games.

When I first looked at the reviews for Microsoft Flight Simulator for PC, which was launched last year, I was astounded by the excellent marks it received from almost every gaming publication on the planet. Sure, I knew the game was a technological wonder, and I knew there was an audience for it since there are real flight pilots in my family who can’t stop talking about how “fun” these games are. But I never imagined that I, who despises traveling on commercial aircraft, would like it as much as I did (you can check more about my disdain of being stuck inside a plane for hours on end in my Airplane Mode review). And, even better, I never thought I’d grow hooked to it.

The first thing I did (like with everyone else playing this game) was to locate my home in the game.

It’s the first time a Flight Simulator game has been published on a console, which is reason enough to rejoice. These “games” (and this is not meant as a slight; rather, it is a reality) have always been much too CPU-intensive for any low-end platform, putting even the most powerful computers to the test. They’re very difficult games that are intended to depict hundreds of kilometers of the whole globe in a realistic manner for hours on end, with no loading periods… They’re now accessible on consoles as well. What’s more shocking is that Microsoft Flight Simulator can be played on a console for around $300.

Granted, Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox Series S/X isn’t quite as good as the PC version. In order to function correctly on both platforms, these versions have to be reduced in a few places. Thankfully, since Microsoft Flight Simulator is more CPU-intensive than GPU-intensive, you’ll receive excellent results regardless of whatever console you choose, as both Series S and X CPUs are similar. The changes include in certain aesthetic elements like textural quality and draw distance, which will vary depending on which city you fly over.

If only travelling to the beach could be as simple and fast…

Not every city is portrayed with the same level of cleanliness and accuracy. New York is as realistic as it gets, putting, for example, Insomniac’s Spider-Man to shame. Meanwhile, a city like So Paulo lacks well-rendered buildings and roads, making it seem as if you’re floating around the city using the Google Maps 3D viewer. Is that dissatisfying? Yes, but it was a pretty particular nitpicking point. I was flying at a low level, attempting to locate my home, former college, city landmarks, and other such locations. You won’t have to deal with any graphics issues if you take a genuine long-haul commercial aircraft from one location to another. On the contrary, you’ll be blown away by how lifelike everything seems.

In principle, this game seems to be a waste of time for “casual” players. In a flying simulator, how will we be able to have fun? So, given that I played this game for almost ten hours straight on my first day with it, I’m guessing Microsoft Flight Simulator finds a way to amuse you without you even recognizing it. I began searching for my home, my former exchange program house in England, my college, then Machu Picchu, the Statue of Liberty, Kilimanjaro… as soon as I saw how realistic the pictures were and how simple it was to select a location and start exploring. I’d constantly be on the lookout for a new location to visit, and as a consequence, I’d lose track of time. Not to mention the many lessons and challenges available to you!

I’m not sure how to describe why this game is so soothing. It is what it is.

With its controls and physics, the Flight Simulator series is renowned for being ridiculously realistic. With that stated, this version will be available on a console and, more importantly, on Game Pass. Everyone will want to try it out, but only 0.001% of those who do will be familiar with the inner workings of an aircraft and how to fly one in a realistic way. Thankfully, the creators have created a whole new gaming system that is very flexible.

You can play Microsoft Flight Simulator with no assistance, which requires you to manually press each button on the cockpit with a shocking level of realism, or with the most relaxed and casual settings available, which include tons of AI-driven assets and simplified controls that work well on an Xbox controller. I found the control system to be even more user-friendly than, say, the flying controls in Grand Theft Auto V. Although you will still need to conduct certain pre- and post-flight checks, the game will always assist you with prompts and instructions. At no point did I believe it was difficult for me to fly any of the aircraft offered. I even managed to land a Boeing 747! Nobody was killed!

“Concrete jungle, where dreams are maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

To be honest, I was surprised by how much I liked Microsoft Flight Simulator. There isn’t a single action in it. It will be up to you to find a goal to accomplish inside it. However, there’s something about it that’s addicting and seductive. It’s a really peaceful game that requires very little of your time. It offers you the whole globe to explore, with an incredible level of realism, easy controls, and a laid-back ambiance. I never imagined such a “game” would work on a console, yet here we are. This is the first next-gen exclusive I’ve played on my new Xbox, and I’m really enjoying myself.

It never ceases to surprise me that you can play anywhere in the globe with such a high degree of realism. That said, some cities are obviously more realistic than others, with several large cities seeming to be little more than the Google Maps 3D viewer at best.

Despite being a full-fledged simulator, the game has simplified controls for beginners, making it even simpler to play than titles such as Grand Theft Auto V. Controls, physics, and realism may all be customized to a surprising degree, depending on your skill level.

Realistic engine sounds and a plethora of radio conversation with radio towers are included in the game, which will delight aviation fans. While listening to a podcast, this is the ideal game to play.

This shouldn’t be enjoyable in principle. I somehow managed to lose track of time and play Microsoft Flight Simulator for a whole day without realizing it, and I had a hard time turning the console off. It has a certain quality about it that makes it seductive and addicting.

Final Score: 9.0

Microsoft Flight Simulator is now available on Xbox One S and Xbox One X, as well as PC.

On the Xbox Series S, the game was reviewed.
