ArenaNet has announced that Guild Wars 2, the still-popular MMORPG, will receive DirectX 11 compatibility in the near future. The news is funny since DirectX 11 and Guild Wars 2 are both old games that have been enjoyed by millions of players since their debut on August 28, 2012.

The Guild Wars 2 team’s Senior Engine Programmer, James Fulop, has written a letter outlining why DirectX 11 is finally being introduced to the MMORPG. According to Fulops, the update will improve performance and provide additional aesthetic choices, the latter of which should result in a more attractive game.

[…] We prioritize client performance and want everyone to be able to play at the maximum framerate possible. We discovered that the game might sometimes stop while rendering work was completed. Guild Wars 2 has been available for nine years, and including certain DirectX11-dependent features may help the game maintain its visual appeal over time.

DirectX11 also has certain current technological features that DirectX9 does not. The first step toward being able to perform more shinny things is to upgrade to DirectX11. We chose to incorporate the open source rendering library BGFX into Guild Wars 2 after much study. BGFX is well-written, supports a variety of graphics backends, and is already in use in a number of games throughout the industry. On their official website, you may discover more about it.

Why didn’t the Guild Wars 2 team switch to DirectX 12 or Vulkan right away? According to Fulop, DirectX 11 currently offers enough performance gain. He also claimed that DirectX 11 should sufficient since it has been used by thousands of games for almost a decade and is extremely reliable.

On September 21, 2021, the beta for Guild Wars 2 with DirectX 11 support will begin. The beta may be accessed via the game’s Graphics Options menu.
