Tier List for Age of Empires 4 Civilizations

Age of Empires IV has only been out for a few days, but the meta is already changing. Even though there are only eight civilizations to choose from, the game is fantastic and a welcome break from the previous games. Each of these AoE 4 civilizations has its own set of troops, bonuses, technology, and a concentration on unit upgrades to make them even more powerful. For example, whereas the English excel in archery via the Longbowmen, the Delhi Sultanate’s main troop is the War Elephants. Some civilizations are more strong than others, which is particularly true for new players and those just getting started in Age of Empires 4. We’ll go through each of the races in AoE4 and determine the greatest AoE4 Civs based on hundreds of ladder games and a recent pro tournament in our AoE4 Tier List (Genesis). The list is mostly focused on land maps; however, if you find yourself on a maritime chart, just follow the French and you’ll be OK.

Descriptors for the List of Civilization Levels

The French are now one of the most popular civilizations for a variety of reasons. They’re simple to play and understand since there’s no need to plan out any construction sites apart from the Keep. When you put Archery Ranges or Stables near to Keeps, the units they create will cost 20% less. They also get a 30% discount on any economy-related technologies, as well as quicker Villager and Scout production every age, which increases to 20% in Castle Age. Furthermore, their Trade Ships return 20% more Gold, and their resource drop-off facilities cost 25% less Wood. You may have noticed by now that the French are granted a slew of economic perks with no drawbacks or requirements for skill, which is why they’re so great in the current meta for both newbies and high-elo players pushing the ranked ladder. Royal Knights are now the most powerful Feudal Age unit in the game, being an Age 2 cavalry force with the strength of an Age 3 unit. They cost 140 Food and 100 Gold to create, which is a bargain given their strength, and they provide additional damage for three seconds after charging opposing troops. In terms of the late game, the French flourish throughout the Imperial Age as well, thanks to their formidable unit, the Cannon, a one-of-a-kind siege weapon. Finally, the College of Artillery, Red Palace, Enlistment Incentives— reduces all unit costs by 10%, Guild Hall— generates and stores resources that scale over time, Royal Institute— 20% cheaper French-specific technologies, and the Arbaletrier— high-damage, ranged anti-armor units with a defensive pavise shield that grants them melee armor. The French deservingly take the top spot on the AoE4 Tier List.

The Abbasid Dynasty has two legendary cavalry units that are fantastic against a wide range of playstyles, making them very adaptable. The Camel Archers are a highly mobile cavalry ranged unit that is particularly efficient against spearmen and reduces the damage dealt by opposing cavalry. The Camel Riders, on the other hand, are melee options who also have the power to make opposing cavalry inflict less damage. Having one of these in your army merely for the cavalry debuff is always worth it against cavalry-heavy forces throughout the Feudal and Castle Ages. They get the same 25% Berry Gathering speed as the Delhi Sultanate, with the exception that they cannot harvest from Boars. Additionally, infantry troops of the Abbasid Dynasty may build Rams and Siege Towers without the need of Siege Engineering Tech. They also have the Culverin, a powerful long-range siege gun designed to eliminate other siege troops. Finally, the Abbasid may move through the ages and receive new technologies thanks to the House of Wisdom. Entering a Golden Age will hasten the collecting of resources, as well as the pace of research and manufacturing. Even though it is not as powerful as the French, the Abbasid Dynasty may be highly potent in the hands of an experienced player.

The Russians have a highly energetic playstyle and are quite strong early and late in the game. Their Scouts are employed to kill Sheep, Wolves, Boars, and Deer, gaining Gold and increasing their bounty score each time they do so. With a large number of Scouts on the map, you have a lot of map view and control at no extra cost. Bonus gathering rates are obtained by increasing the reward to particular levels. Hunting Cabins are Rus-specific and function similarly to Mills, with the extra bonus of creating limitless Gold according on the quantity of trees around, making them a valuable economic boost throughout the game. The Rus High Armory lowers siege unit costs by 20% while also unlocking four new siege technologies that boost Ram damage, Trebuchet and Mangonel setup time, Bombard reload time, and Springald range. Rus are immensely effective in the late game, when everything centers on who has the best siege forces, thanks to a large number of great technologies centered on siege troops. The Golden Gate, which allows for faster resource exchange and creates a new one every sixty seconds, and the Kremlin, which works as a Wooden Fortress with Castle Technologies, are two other important Rus features.

Overall, the English are a strong culture to play and are highly successful against the French. Longbowman, a cheap long-ranged infantry with significant damage and range, is available to the English early in the game. The King’s Palace is a landmark that serves as a Town Center, complete with all behaviors, technology, units, and bonuses. It is presently one of the most powerful economic landmarks in the game, allowing the player to grow the economy while concentrating on technology and progressing through the Ages. They also have the chance to get the Network of Castles benefit, which enhances the attack speed of surrounding units, making them ideal for defensive and turtling playstyles. Instead of agricultural equipment, English Villagers battle with bows, and their Town Centers shoot twice as many arrows. Farms are built at half the cost of traditional farms, and Mill Farms harvest 15 percent quicker. There are a few more important inventions and structures associated with the English culture that are worth mentioning: Council Hall— produces Longbowmen at twice the speed and contains their upgrades, Abbey of Kings— heals all friendly units that are out of combat by +4 health every one and a half seconds, Abbey of Kings— heals all friendly units that are out of combat by +4 health every one and a half seconds, Abbey of Kings— heals all friendly units that are out of combat by +4 health every one and a Trebuchet missiles shatter on contact, enhancing their area of effect, and finally, the Arrow Volley, a Longbowman ability that offers them a 70% extra attack speed when used.

The Mongols are now doing very well, owing to their ability to quickly shift all of their structures. When combined with the Dark Age Ovoo Superior Mobility improvement (buildings can move, pack, and unpack 50 percent quicker), this mechanism opens up a number of new tactics, such as Dark Age Town Center rushing. The majority of individuals recruit a few locals, enable Ger to harvest resources at home, and pack up their Town Center and move it adjacent to the enemy’s. They also acquire a few more Early Horseman troops, and it’s pretty much game over at this point. One of the most difficult tactics to resist at the moment, particularly in soloQ ranked games. The Mongols also have a reasonably powerful mid-late game since their economic landmark, The Silver Tree, functions as a market that can produce merchants 50% quicker and at half the cost, resulting in a massive resource boom. The Town Center rush is very certainly going to be patched out soon, and depending on how it’s done, Mongols may wind up being weaker than other civs.

The Early Man-at-Arms of the Holy Roman Empire perform well against opposing Archers and Spearmen throughout the Feudal Age. They also have a unique Landsknecht light melee infantry and many Castle Age improvements for Barracks troops. These troops wield massive two-handed swords that, because to the splash damage from their melee strikes, are powerful in mixed armies. The Prelate is another one of the unique Holy Roman troops, since they may immediately encourage Villagers to increase their collecting pace by up to 50% and extract more Gold from Relics. They can be created for 100 Gold from the Dark Age forward, making them a fantastic method to increase the civilization’s economy all the way through the game. Their structures that are built near a Town Center or Keep get the potential to self-repair. Elzbach Palace— makes all buildings within its influence take 33% less damage, Palace of Swabia— Villagers are made 75 percent faster at only 35 percent of their initial cost, Devoutness— inspired Villagers gather resources 10% faster, and Meinwerk Palace— acts as a Blacksmith with 25% cheaper technology research.

The Chinese are masters of speedy construction, with villagers double the speed of fortifications and half the speed of all other structures. They also have a variety of unique units, the most famous of which is the Nest of Bees, a Mangonel variation that unleashes a torrent of rockets that deliver considerable area of effect damage even against well armored opponents. Chinese siege artillery technology is also excellent, with Reload Drills (which cuts Bombard reload time by 33 percent), Reusable Barrels (which reduces the cost of Nest of Bees by 25 percent), and Pyrotechnics all available (increase the range of all gunpowder units by 20 percent ). As excellent siege forces and technology are a must-have, all of these factors combine to make the Chinese one of the great late-game powerhouses. Other notable features include free Chemistry technology at Age 4, Zhuge Nu— a repeater crossbowman unique unit, Fire Lancer— a light cavalry unique unit, Grenadier— a unit that throws grenades that deal area of effect damage, 20 percent faster docks, and the Dynasty mechanic, which grants them special bonuses for constructing landmarks. Early-game strength is something the Chinese lack, since their early-game troops do not outperform others, which is why most players lose in the first part of the game. Note: Chinese are now on the AoE4 Tier List somewhere between B and C, owing to the fact that the Nest of Bees is not outperforming Mangonels as it should, owing to a problem, which you can read more about here.

The Delhi Sultanate civilization is one of the most difficult to master since its build orders are mostly focused on completing games in Castle Age (due to the civilization’s inability to execute ram rushes and the absence of Dark Age special troops). When compared to other civilizations, their technology is free, but it takes 4 to 5 times longer to finish. To compensate, the Delhi Sultanates demand the player to construct at least three Mosques and garrison them with nine Scholars in order to achieve research times comparable to those of other civs. All of this takes a lot of time, Gold, and Wood, which at current prices doesn’t make the free technology worth it since it isn’t even close to being free, and it slows down your Dark and Feudal Age advancement owing to a shortage of resources. As a consequence, the second Town Center and Castle Age upgrades are substantially slower. Their Garden Bounty civilization feature enables them to develop Berry Bushes into Orchards which give larger quantities of Food and they can also harvest from them 25 percent quicker. In compared to other civilizations who depend on Sheep, this suggests they have a significantly superior alternative for food collecting. The fundamental goal of the Delhi Sultanate’s free technology is to maintain a strong economy, which will be utilized to fund the construction of their distinctive forces, the War Elephants. While they’re fairly powerful, they come with a steep price tag of 600 Food and 400 Gold and tragically they are destroyed by any army composition that employs Bombards. Sprigalds are unable to oppose enemy siege in time to safeguard the War Elephants since the Delhi Sultanate lacks unique improvements to Siege Weaponry. Other notable Delhi-specific buildings and technology include Zeal, which grants a 50% bonus attack speed to units that have been healed by a Scholar, Hisar Academy, which generates food based on the number of technologies researched, and Zeal, which grants a 50% bonus attack speed to units that have been healed by a Scholar. Slow-Burning Barriers — Increases the fire resistance of Towers, Keeps, and Outposts; Village Fortresses— Keeps operate as a Town Center (doing everything a Town Center can do) for 10 seconds; and finally, the Forced March— Infantry units get the ability to march twice as fast for 10 seconds.
